20 Questions With Will Golden, Account Supervisor

D Custom is excited to welcome a new account supervisor, Will Golden!

Will is a Dallas native and a marketing vet with an MBA from SMU and experience working with top brands such as Apple, HBO, and AT&T. Will is an avid learner with plenty of marketing certifications and accolades to show for it — but above all, he’s passionate about client service and believes that great relationships are the key to great marketing. We’re so excited to have him on board, we couldn’t wait to get to know everything about him! I asked him 20 questions — all very important — so you can get to know him too.
Q1. Where are you from?
A. Dallas!
Q2. What’s your favorite food?
A. Texas barbecue. Pecan Lodge in Deep Ellum is my go-to for Dallas, but Franklin’s in Austin is the best I’ve ever had.
Q3. Favorite place you’ve ever been?
A. Barcelona, mainly because I could live off sangria and tapas if I had to. Plus, I think we should normalize siestas in the U.S.
Q4. Why are you most excited about working at D Custom?
A. The opportunity to expand my subject matter expertise in digital marketing and content creation.
Q5. Favorite thing about your job?
A. Building personal relationships and helping clients solve complex issues and ultimately benefit their bottom line.
Q6. What is the best project you ever worked on?
A. My favorite project ever (and probably hardest ever) was when I led a complete redesign and content overhaul of AT&T’s flagship store in Times Square. The exterior digital display content was particularly interesting. Since Times Square is a hot mess of content everywhere you look, it was an exciting challenge to figure out how to differentiate it in a way that would stand out and attract attention in such a busy, high-profile area.
Q7. What is the embarrassing thing that you think about at 3 a.m.? Mine is when I walked in late to a second-year lecture at university and I didn’t realize they were doing a careers seminar, and the guy presenting turned to me in front of the whole lecture and was like, what do YOU want to be when you grow up? I panicked and said a pirate.
A. OK, first off, this is incredible, I’m dying at your pirate story. When I was 10 years old, I was in a school play of “The Jungle Book.” My character was also the narrator, so I had a lot of dialogue, including the very first lines of the entire play. Also important to note, the show took place outdoors in an amphitheater adjacent to the school playground, and because I was living in London at the time, it was perpetually raining … So on the day we opened, I walked out, immediately slipped on the wet stage, fell on my face, and then audibly cursed into my microphone in front of the entire student body, faculty, and my parents.
Q8. That’s amazing. What do you like to do outside of work?
Travel to new and exciting destinations, try new restaurants, spend time with friends and family, binge-watch mystery and true-crime dramas, and, of course, support the Dallas Mavericks, Cowboys, Stars, and the Texas Longhorns.
Q9. Weirdest quarantine hobby or habit?
A. Trading stocks on Robinhood.
Q10. That’s way better than mine. Favorite thing to do in Dallas?
A. Spending an afternoon at Katy Trail Ice House with friends, enjoying nice weather and the barbecue they bring in on the weekends.
Q11. What did you study in school?
A. As an undergrad at UT Austin, I majored in advertising with a minor in business foundations. In my MBA at SMU, I majored in marketing with a minor in management.
Q12. Do you have any hidden talents? Please say you are secretly amazing at close-up magic.
A. I’ve been told I’m a surprisingly good cook. But my menu pretty much only consists of pasta-based dishes.
Q13. What are your Spotify sun, moon, and rising signs?
A. OK, well, this is more embarrassing than I anticipated but … sun: Drake, moon: John Mayer, rising: Dua Lipa.
Q14. What are your actual sun, moon, and rising signs?
A. Disclaimer: I have no idea what these mean. I just plugged in my birthday to an online astrology calculator, so I assume these are right. Aquarius: sun, Gemini: moon, Virgo: rising.
Q15. What is your alternate-universe career path?
A. Professional political operative/consultant.
Q16. OK, so I’m going to assume you are secretly in the CIA. Pineapple on pizza: Yes or no?
A. Yes, but only if it’s thin crust.
Q17. Good answer. Favorite beverage?
A. Non-alcoholic: Arnold Palmer. Alcoholic: espresso martini.
Q18. What’s your favorite Cory-ism so far?
A.He’s about to go on vacation, so he’s been calling me “Johnny-on-the-spot.”
Q19. What is your greatest fear?
A. I get a little bit claustrophobic if I’m stuck in a small space for long enough.
Q20. Don’t ever read “The Premature Burial” by Edgar Allen Poe. What are you currently reading?
A. Matthew McConaughey’s autobiography, “Greenlights.” I’ve been a fan of him since the first season of True Detective on HBO. He’s also very involved with the Longhorns, which I appreciate. But I found his story really interesting. Though, if you do check it out, I highly recommend the audio version so you can hear him narrate it!
